Kiln publishes once a year, so each issue has to feel like an object worth keeping: a journal that can sit on a shelf next to the pots it writes about.
Before drawing a single page I visited four studios with the two editors, so the layouts started from the work and not from a template. The system is a twelve-column grid that bends around photography, one serif at two sizes and a cover that changes paper stock every edition.
Issue three sold its full run of 1,500 copies in pre-order, and the grid now runs across Kiln’s website too.
